Cogspring focuses on hand-wound pocket watches from the late nineteenth century through to the mid-twentieth century — primarily Swiss, English, and American pocket calibres. Hunter and demi-hunter cases, open-face pieces, and repeaters are all within scope. If you are unsure whether your particular piece is suitable, an initial enquiry is the best way to find out.

A standard pocket watch bench service takes approximately four weeks from intake to collection. Dial restoration is often completed in three weeks. Wristwatch conversion projects are more involved and typically run eight to twelve weeks, depending on the complexity of the movement and the availability of appropriate case components. Turnaround estimates are discussed at intake and updated if circumstances change.

The workshop's approach prioritises preservation. Case polishing is never done unless the owner requests it. Hallmarks and period engravings are protected. Parts are replaced only when necessary for function, and original components are returned with the piece where possible. The aim is to restore running order while leaving the character of the watch intact.

Yes. The workshop at Lebuh Pantai, George Town accepts pieces by appointment and during bench hours (Monday to Saturday, 10:00–18:00). Owners who drop off in person have the opportunity to speak with the watchmaker directly and discuss the piece's history — information that often informs the approach taken at the bench.

The conversion begins with a full assessment of the pocket watch movement and dial. The watchmaker then prepares a written plan — including photographs — outlining the proposed case, lugs, and any modifications required. This plan is reviewed and approved by the owner before any irreversible work proceeds. Once agreed, the movement is serviced if needed, fitted to the new case, and tested for accuracy. The finished piece is collected with documentation of all work performed.

For pocket watches in daily use, a service every three to five years is a reasonable interval. Pieces stored for extended periods benefit from being wound and run periodically to keep the lubricants distributed. Avoid storing watches near magnets or in environments with sharp temperature changes. When in doubt, bring the piece in for an inspection — the watchmaker can advise on storage and handling specific to your calibre.
